Our DNEG Episodic team scoops Emmy nods for their work on ‘The Last of Us Season 2’ & ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2’.
We’re thrilled to share that our talented Episodic VFX teams are on the ticket for 2 Emmy nominations this year! Their spectacular work on The Last of Us Season 2 and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 has been recognized in the ‘Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Season Or A Movie’ category.
Following our Emmy & VES Award-winning work on Season 1, we were thrilled to return to bring the game's iconic second installment to life for HBO. Our Episodic team, led by VFX Supervisor Stephen James, tackled some of DNEG's most complex environment work to date!
As the characters embark on their journey through Seattle, our crew delivered ocean views, decaying landmarks, CG ivy, moss and overgrowth spreading across buildings, and iconic landmarks custom-built for large-scale destruction. Then came that epic finale - where we crafted expansive CG environments and dynamic weather systems that pushed our water and destruction pipelines to new limits! We delivered multiple water shots across different sequences with crashing waves, animated boats, digi-double soldiers and custom FX simulations, all set against a lightning storm that was unfolding in the city.
See how we did it in our VFX Breakdown below!
Returning to Middle Earth following our Emmy & VES Award-winning work on Season 1 was such a thrill for our team! Led by VFX Supervisor Greg Butler, our Episodic team worked across all episodes of the second season, and lead the charge for the grand finale as the main VFX partner for episodes 7 and 8.
Key work for the new season included the large-scale digital environment build for the legendary Elven city of Eregion - and it's destruction in the finale - as well as the design, build and animation of Damrod the Hill Troll and large-scale FX, digi-doubles, CG prop enhancements, and crowd work for the climatic battle sequences!

Huge congratulations to our amazing teams and to all of today's nominees - including the wonderful crews at ReDefine, who received a nod for their work on The Penguin in the 'Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode' category!
Congratulations, all!
